Bogd Khan Palace Museum

Bogd Khan Palace Museum, also known as the “Green Palace,” is a unique historical and cultural complex in Ulaanbaatar that served as the winter residence of Mongolia’s last theocratic ruler, the 8th Bogd Jebtsundamba Khutuktu.
The complex contains highly symbolic architectural elements and structures. These include decorative protective gates, ceremonial towers, and elaborately designed wooden constructions assembled with traditional joinery techniques. Some parts of the complex are built without nails, using intricate locking methods involving dozens of joint types. These designs reflect both Buddhist symbolism and Mongolian imperial tradition.
Inside the temples, the museum preserves rare and invaluable artifacts of Mongolian religious and artistic heritage. These include large papier-mache sculptures of the Four Great Kings, embroidered thangka paintings, ritual instruments, and highly respected works by the first Bogd, Zanabazar. Among the most notable exhibits are the famous “21 Tara” statues, representing refined spiritual expressions of compassion and serenity.

Opening hours: 10:00–17:00 (closed on Mondays)
Tickets: Separate photography fees may apply, so visitors should ask before taking photos inside.
Best experience: A guided visit in Mongolian or English is highly recommended to fully understand the symbolism and historical context.
Tour tip: It is often combined with visits to the Gandantegchinlen Monastery and the Choijin Lama Temple Museum for a full-day cultural tour of Ulaanbaatar.
