Burkhan Khaldun Mountain

The mountain is part of the UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape due to its outstanding historical significance, its preservation of traditional Mongolian sacred practices, and its largely untouched natural environment. It is also frequently mentioned in the historical chronicle The Secret History of the Mongols (27 times), highlighting its importance in Mongolian history.

The mountain features several ritual sites, including three ovoos (lower, middle, and upper shrines). Near the middle shrine, there is a bronze cauldron-like feature, and near the summit, a small oval-shaped lake is found in a rocky basin. The surrounding region also contains important archaeological and cultural sites such as the ruins of Saridag Monastery, Khagiin Khar Lake, and Oglugchiin Kherem, along with numerous burial mounds, stone statues, and deer stones.

Burkhan Khaldun has been officially recognized as a state sacred mountain since 1995, and state-level worship ceremonies are held every four years according to presidential decrees.

TRAVEL TIPS

Permission: Entry requires special permission approved by the provincial governor’s office. Documentation must be arranged in advance.

Transportation: A 4x4 off-road vehicle is mandatory due to difficult seasonal road conditions, including river crossings.

Guidance: Visitors should travel with an experienced local guide due to remote terrain and protected status.

Clothing: Warm and layered clothing is essential, as weather conditions can change rapidly even in summer.
