Gun Galuut

The area represents one of the last remaining untouched natural landscapes near the capital and is especially notable as the closest habitat to Ulaanbaatar where argali sheep can be observed in the wild. The wetlands formed at the confluence of the Galuutai stream and the Kherlen River are partially marshy but serve as a vital sanctuary for birds, making it a true paradise for birdlife. Researchers have recorded more than 100 species of birds in this small wetland ecosystem.

Historically, Gun Galuut is also known as the birthplace of D. Natsagdorj, the founder of modern Mongolian literature, who often praised the natural beauty of this region in his poetry.

Travel Tips

Wildlife Watching:
For spotting argali sheep, the best time is early morning at sunrise or late afternoon before sunset. Birdwatching is most rewarding from May to September.

Photography:
The Kherlen River bends, wetland reflections, and wildlife moments offer excellent photography opportunities. Visitors are strongly encouraged to use zoom lenses to avoid disturbing animals.

Visitors can relax along the Kherlen River, enjoy fishing (where permitted), or explore the protected area on horseback for a closer experience of the landscape.
