Khoton Lake lies within the protected area of Altai Tavan Bogd National Park. It is approximately 21.5 km long, about 4 km wide, and reaches a maximum depth of around 58 meters. The lake is connected to Khurgan Lake by a 2.6 km-long water channel.

Historically, this region was the site of major battles between the Dzungar Khanate and the Qing Dynasty, and the event is recorded in history as the Battle of Khoton Lake.

Travel Tips

Photography:
The best photographs can be taken from the western shore of the lake at sunrise, when snow-capped mountains reflect like a mirror on the calm water surface. The landscape is especially stunning in late September, when the larch forests turn golden yellow.

Preparation:
As the area is close to the border, visitors must obtain a border permit in advance. Even in summer, nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing, so warm clothing, a suitable tent, and a sleeping bag are essential.

Nearby Attractions:

Travelers can visit the nearby Baga Turgen Waterfall or continue their journey by horseback toward the glaciers of Altai Tavan Bogd National Park.
