Sukhbaatar Square

Originally named Indriin Square in 1921, it was renamed Sukhbaatar Square in 1923 in honor of Damdin Sukhbaatar, one of the leaders of the 1921 People's Revolution, following his death. The square is regarded as the symbolic birthplace of modern Mongolia, where the revolutionary army entered the capital and proclaimed victory.

According to local tradition, the foundation of Sukhbaatar's monument marks the very spot where his horse paused during the revolution. The location was identified by Marshal Khorloogiin Choibalsan, who ordered the original marker to be found before construction began. Designed by renowned sculptor S. Choimbol, the equestrian statue of Damdin Sukhbaatar was unveiled in 1946 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the People's Revolution. The bronze statue stands 4 meters high (approximately 12 meters including its pedestal) and is surrounded by 14 stone lions connected by decorative chains, symbolizing Mongolia's sovereignty and inviolability. An inscription in traditional Mongolian script on the pedestal expresses Sukhbaatar's message of national unity. The statue was recast in bronze in 2011, and it remains the focal point for official ceremonies, where state leaders lay flowers during national celebrations.

Dominating the northern side of the square is the State Palace, featuring the majestic seated statue of Chinggis Khaan, flanked by statues of Ogedei Khan and Kublai Khan, making the square one of the most recognizable landmarks in Mongolia.

Photography:
The best panoramic photos of the State Palace and the monumental statue of Chinggis Khaan can be taken from the southern end of the square. In the evening, the illuminated buildings and decorative lighting create a spectacular setting for night photography.

Activities:
During winter, the square hosts an ice park and a beautifully decorated New Year's tree. In summer, weekends often feature cultural performances, public festivals, book fairs, concerts, and other community events, making it a lively place to experience local life.
