Located on the northern terrace of the Delger River in Buren Togtokh Soum, Khovsgol Province, the Ushgiin Uvur Deer Stone Complex is one of Mongolia's most remarkable archaeological sites. Situated approximately 18 km west of Moron, at the foot of Ulaan Ushgi Mountain, the complex contains one of the largest concentrations of Deer Stones and Khirigsuur (ancient burial and ritual monuments) in Central Asia, with around 30 Deer Stones standing together in a single location.

The Deer Stones at this site belong to the Mongolian Transbaikalian style, distinguished by finely stylized carvings of flying deer. The monuments range in height from 1.33 meters to 3.75 meters and are carved from light gray, reddish-brown, and bluish-gray granite. Each stone features unique engravings depicting deer, weapons, ornaments, and symbolic motifs.

Among the monuments, one Deer Stone is particularly remarkable for its carved human face. On one narrow side of the stone, the sculptor intricately engraved facial features including the eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, and ears with an earring carved on one ear. This rare depiction provides valuable insight into the artistic traditions and spiritual beliefs of Mongolia's ancient nomadic civilizations.

Travel Tips

Photography:
The intricate carvings are most visible when sunlight strikes the stones from the side, either early in the morning or just before sunset. At these times, the engraved deer, weapons, and decorative motifs stand out beautifully, creating excellent photographic opportunities.

Respect the Heritage:
These Deer Stones are over 3,000 years old and are extremely fragile cultural monuments. Visitors should never climb on the stones, touch the carvings, sit on them, or leave any marks, helping to preserve this irreplaceable archaeological heritage.

Nearby Attractions:

The Ushgiin Uvur complex lies along the main route to Lake Khovsgol, making it an ideal stop for travelers driving from Moron to the lake. It is one of the region's most important historical and cultural attractions and is well worth including in any itinerary.
