Dood Tsagaan Lake

Dood Tsagaan Lake is situated within the Darkhad Depression, with Targan Lake lying to its north and the center of Tsagaannuur Soum located along its western shore. The lake serves as the primary source of drinking water for the soum's population of approximately 2,000 residents.

With a maximum depth of around 15 meters, the lake is connected to the Shishged River, which flows into the Yenisei River and eventually reaches the Arctic Ocean drainage basin. Often referred to as Mongolia's "fish reservoir," Dood Tsagaan Lake is one of the country's richest fishing grounds, supporting a remarkable diversity of freshwater fish. Species such as whitefish, taimen, lenok, and grayling thrive in its cold, crystal-clear waters, making it an important destination for both local communities and professional anglers.

Travel Tips

Photography:
On sunny days, the reflections of the surrounding mountains on the lake's calm surface create spectacular photographic opportunities. Traditional Darkhad dwellings and scenes of local nomadic life along the shoreline also make excellent subjects for memorable travel photos.

Fishing:
A valid fishing permit is required before fishing in the lake. Fishing is strictly prohibited during the spawning seasons in spring and autumn, so visitors should check the regulations and permitted dates in advance.

Preparation:

Access to the lake is challenging, as the roads are often muddy and cross wetland areas. A high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle, such as a Jeep or UAZ, is strongly recommended. Since the lake is located in a high-altitude mountain region, visitors should bring warm clothing as temperatures can change quickly, along with insect repellent to protect against mosquitoes during the summer months.
