Located in Khutag-Ondor Soum of Bulgan Province, alongside the Ulaanbaatar–Moron highway, Uran Togoo Volcano is one of Mongolia's most beautiful and best-preserved extinct volcanoes. Together with the extinct volcanoes Tulga, Togoo, and Jalavch, it forms the Uran-Tulga Natural Monument, a nationally protected area renowned for its volcanic landscape and geological significance.
Also known as Uran Burkheer Mountain, the volcano lies approximately 80 km west of Bulgan City on the highway leading to Moron in Khovsgol Province. It was designated a State Special Protected Area in 1965 due to its outstanding natural value.
Rising to an elevation of 1,686 meters above sea level, Uran Togoo features a remarkably well-preserved volcanic crater. The crater measures approximately 500–600 meters in diameter and 50–60 meters deep. At its center lies a nearly circular crater lake, about 20 meters across and 1.5 meters deep, surrounded by lush forest, creating a striking contrast with the volcanic terrain.
Travel Tips
Photography:
Visitors can walk around the entire rim of the crater, where panoramic views provide the best opportunity to capture the volcano's perfectly circular shape. One of the most iconic photographs is taken from above, looking down at the small crater lake nestled within the volcanic basin.
Nature Conservation:
The trail leading to the crater rim is fairly steep, so visitors are encouraged to stay on designated paths to help prevent soil erosion and protect the fragile volcanic landscape. Please do not collect volcanic rocks as souvenirs.
Safety:
After rainfall, the volcanic basalt rocks can become slippery. It is recommended to wear proper hiking boots rather than casual shoes to ensure a safe and comfortable visit.
