Located in Kharkhorin Soum of Ovorkhangai Province, in the valley of the Orkhon River, Kharkhorin (ancient Karakorum) is the spiritual and historical heart of the Mongolian nation. As the capital of the Great Mongol Empire during the 13th century, it occupied a unique place in world history as one of the political and economic centers of its time.
Founded in 1220 by the decree of Genghis Khan and flourishing under the reign of Ogedei Khan, Kharakhorum became a cosmopolitan city where Eastern and Western civilizations met. Situated along the Silk Road, it served as an important crossroads of trade and culture and is now recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Located approximately 360–380 km from Ulaanbaatar along the main paved highway, near the junction leading to Bat-Olzii Soum in Ovorkhangai Province, the ancient city attracts visitors from around the world. At the modern Kharakhorum Museum, travelers can explore archaeological discoveries from the 13th century, including the city's layout, traditional handicrafts, ancient coins, and rare religious artifacts. Visitors can also see the famous Stone Turtles, which once stood at the four corners of the ancient city walls as symbols of stability, protection, and eternity. These remarkable monuments have survived to the present day.
