Tovhon Monastery

Located on the border of Ovorkhangai and Arkhangai provinces, on the summit of the majestic Shivert Ulaan Mountain in the Khangai Range, Tovkhon Monastery is one of Mongolia’s most important cultural and spiritual heritage sites. It was founded by Undur Gegeen Zanabazar, the First Bogd Jebtsundamba Khutuktu, a great religious leader, artist, and scholar of Mongolian Buddhism.
The monastery is situated in a remote, forested mountain area surrounded by rock formations, about 40 km northwest of Khujirt Soum center and 50 km from Bat-Olzii Soum center. It is built on a small rocky plateau known as Öndör-Ovoot (Shivert Ulaan Mountain), a place of deep spiritual significance.
To reach the monastery, visitors must hike approximately 3–4 km uphill from the parking area. This climb offers a meaningful experience through pristine forest and mountain scenery. Horseback riding is also available, but many visitors prefer walking to fully enjoy the natural surroundings.
Historically, in 1648, at the age of 14, Zanabazar first discovered this unique and peaceful location. In 1651, he built a small stone meditation structure here, referred to as a “Dubkhan” (a place of creation and meditation). Over time, the name evolved into Tovkhon.
What makes Tovkhon Monastery unique is its architecture, built using traditional Mongolian woodworking techniques with interlocking wooden joints and no nails, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and ingenuity. The monastery was placed under state protection in 1992, and restoration work in 2001 rebuilt four temples, two stupas, and the main gate according to its original design.
Travel Tips
Hiking
The walk from the parking area to the monastery takes about 3–4 km uphill. While horses are available, hiking on foot is highly recommended to experience the natural beauty of the forested mountain path.
Photography
The best shots include wide views of the monastery surrounded by cliffs and forests. Climbing slightly higher rocky areas above the monastery offers dramatic panoramic landscape photos.
Preparation
Even in summer, the high-altitude mountain climate can be cool. Visitors should bring comfortable hiking shoes, warm clothing, and sufficient water.
Respect the Site
Tovkhon Monastery is an active sacred site. Visitors are expected to keep noise levels low, respect religious practices, and behave appropriately within the monastery grounds.
