Located in Tariat Soum, Arkhangai Province, on the northern highlands of the Khangai Mountain Range, Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake is one of Mongolia’s most beautiful freshwater lakes. It is a unique natural formation created by ancient volcanic activity and is closely connected to the nearby Khorgo Volcano, forming the core of the Khorgo–Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake National Park

The lake lies about 180 km from Tsetserleg city and sits at an elevation of approximately 2,210 meters above sea level. It was formed around 8,000 years ago when volcanic eruptions blocked river flows, creating a large natural dam lake.

The surrounding landscape is dominated by dramatic basalt lava formations, cliffs, caves, and valleys, shaped by ancient volcanic eruptions. These formations provide numerous natural shelters and create a highly scenic and geologically rich environment.

At the northern end of the lake stands Khorgo Crater, a dormant volcano with a crater approximately 200 meters wide, 70–80 meters deep, and sloping at 30–36 degrees. The crater and surrounding slopes are covered with forests of pine and larch, along with abundant wildflowers and berries.
