Khorgo Crater

Khorgo Volcano rises to an elevation of 2,240 meters above sea level. It is part of a volcanic field where lava once flowed eastward, shaping the valleys of the Suman and Chuluut Rivers over a distance of more than 100 kilometers. These ancient lava flows remain visible today as rugged basalt formations across the surrounding landscape.

One of the unique features of Khorgo is its basaltic rock terrain, where hardy shrubs such as dwarf pine grow in crevices, and wild berries and nuts are relatively abundant in sheltered areas. The volcanic rock also contains numerous caves and tunnels formed by ancient lava flows.

Within approximately 20 km of Khorgo Crater are other extinct volcanoes, including Bosgo Crater, Khyr Crater, and Suu Crater. Bosgo Crater is notable for its partially collapsed rim and a small lake at its base. The surrounding volcanic ash and sediment layers have also been known to contain rare mineral formations.

Travel Tips

Walking & Hiking

From the parking area, it takes about 15–20 minutes to reach the crater rim via a basalt rock trail. The path is moderately steep, so sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are strongly recommended.

Photography

The most impressive views are from the crater rim, where you can capture both the inner volcanic cone and the vast Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake in the background. Walking around the full rim provides multiple panoramic angles.

Safety Notes

The crater edges are steep and unstable in some areas. Visitors should be cautious near the rim. Basalt rocks can also be sharp, so care should be taken to avoid slipping or injury.

Nearby Attractions

After visiting Khorgo Crater, travelers can relax along the shores of Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, and continue their journey to nearby natural wonders such as Chuluut Canyon and Taikhar Rock, forming one of the most scenic routes in central Mongolia.
