Khyargas Lake lies within Khyargas Soum, Uvs Province, and is recognized as a protected natural area covering a total of 3,328 km², officially designated as a natural complex reserve in 2000. The protected area also includes Airag Lake, forming an interconnected wetland ecosystem of high ecological importance. The lake is located approximately 1,272 km west of Ulaanbaatar.

The water of Khyargas Lake is odorless, saline, and highly dynamic in appearance, with its color and clarity changing depending on weather, season, and wind conditions. The lake is typically clearest during winter when it is covered by ice and water movement is minimal. In contrast, during summer and autumn, strong winds often stir sediments from the lakebed, causing the water to appear more turbid and yellowish.

In winter, when the lake freezes, reduced movement allows sediments to settle, significantly improving water clarity. Seasonal variations in wind, inflow sediments, and lakebed disturbance play a major role in shaping the lake’s changing appearance throughout the year.

Travel Tips

Photography

The most iconic viewpoint is from the top of Khetsuu Khad, overlooking the vast blue surface of the lake. At sunset, the white cliffs turn golden, creating a stunning contrast with the deep blue water.

Activities

Visitors can relax along the lakeshore, enjoy birdwatching, or take boat trips toward Khetsüü Khad. The lake’s exceptional clarity allows glimpses of underwater rock formations in certain areas.

Safety Notes

Some sections of the lakeshore drop off sharply, so swimming should be done with caution. Summers can be extremely hot due to the semi-desert climate, so sun protection, hats, and sufficient water are essential.

Getting There

Khyargas Lake is relatively accessible, located along the main paved route from Ulaanbaatar to Ulaangom. From the main road, some sections leading to the lakeshore may require driving on unpaved terrain.
