Uvs Lake

Uvs Lake lies in the northeastern part of Uvs Province at the northern edge of the Great Lakes Depression. It is a shallow saline lake with a maximum depth of about 30 meters, and its northernmost extension reaches into the Republic of Tuva, Russia. The lake is considered a remnant of an ancient inland sea that once covered a vast area of Central Asia thousands of years ago.

The Uvs Lake Basin meets UNESCO World Heritage criteria (ix) and (x) and was inscribed as a natural heritage site during the 27th session of the World Heritage Committee, becoming the 769th listed property. It is recognized as a transboundary ecosystem of global importance, shared between Mongolia and Russia.

The basin acts as a natural climatic boundary between Siberia and Central Asia, creating extreme temperature variations: summers can reach up to +47°C, while winters may drop to −58°C. Despite these harsh conditions, the region supports rich biodiversity, including around 400 species of birds and approximately 100 species of mammals, such as the endangered snow leopard, argali sheep, and Siberian ibex.

Photography

The best compositions include the golden sand dunes along the lakeshore combined with the distant Turgun Mountain range. Sunrise is especially magical, as the lake surface reflects a golden glow across the horizon.

Birdwatching

Uvs Lake is a paradise for bird enthusiasts. The best time to visit is between May and September, when migratory birds are most active. A binocular or telephoto lens is highly recommended.

Preparation

The lakeshore area can have a high number of mosquitoes and insects during warmer months, so insect repellent and protective clothing are essential. Summer temperatures can be very high, so sunscreen, hats, and sufficient water are also necessary.

Getting There

Uvs Lake is easily accessible from Ulaangom city, as it is located nearby. However, some sections of the route to the lakeshore may require driving on sandy or unpaved terrain.
