In western Mongolia, the Altai Tavan Bogd Mountains, located in Ulaankhus Soum, Bayan-Olgii Province, represent the highest mountain system in the country. Often referred to as the “Roof of Mongolia,” the range consists of five main peaks, including Cold Peak, the highest point in Mongolia at 4,374 meters above sea level.
The region also contains three major glaciers:
Potanin Glacier (the largest, approximately 14 km long)
Alexander Glacier
Grane Glacier
Since the first recorded ascent by Mongolian climbers in 1956, more than 700 climbers have reached its peaks, making it one of the most popular mountaineering destinations in Mongolia.
The Altai region is also rich in biodiversity, with around 1,200 plant species, including 131 woody and shrub species and 889 herbaceous species. Wildlife includes endangered and protected animals such as the snow leopard, otter, Altai argali, ibex, and red deer.
Archaeologically, the area contains numerous ancient burial sites from the Hunnu, Turkic, Uyghur, and Mongol Empire periods, along with rock carvings, petroglyphs, and inscriptions dating back 2,500–3,000 years. Unique deer stones in the Altai region often depict horses instead of deer, distinguishing them from those found in other parts of Mongolia.
Travel Tips
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Munkh Möst Canyon is July and August. Experiencing ice inside the canyon while the surrounding landscape is warm creates a truly unforgettable contrast.
Preparation
The canyon interior is cold and slippery even in summer. Visitors should wear warm clothing and non-slip hiking boots to ensure safety while exploring.
Route
The best way to reach the canyon is from Renchinlkhumbe Soum center, often by horseback due to the difficult terrain. The route includes marshy areas, forest paths, and rugged landscapes, so hiring a local guide is strongly recommended.
Environmental Protection
This is a fragile and sensitive ecosystem. Visitors are strongly advised to avoid littering, damaging natural formations, or disturbing the environment in any way in order to preserve its unique natural condition for future generations.
