Blue Lake of Khar Zurkh

The lake lies approximately 35 km northwest of Tsenkhermandal Soum center, not far from the eastern regional highway. It consists of two interconnected freshwater lakes situated at an elevation of 1,675 meters above sea level, nestled in the foothills of Khar Zurkh Mountain. The mountain itself is characterized by steep, rocky slopes and stands prominently without forest cover on its northern side.

Surrounded by mountains, the lake area is rich in flora and fauna, creating a peaceful and ecologically diverse landscape. Khar Zurkh Mountain, Khukh Lake, and the Senger Stream are all mentioned in The Secret History of the Mongols, further emphasizing the site's historical importance.

A monument has been erected on the lakeshore in honor of the 840th anniversary of Genghis Khan’s birth. Surrounding it is a semi-circular installation with a diameter of 108 meters, featuring wooden sculptures representing 36 Great Khans of the Golden Lineage who ruled Mongolia. At the center of the complex are depictions of Genghis Khan, his father Yesugei, his mother Oelun, and his principal queen Borte Ujin, making a total of 50 wooden sculptures in the entire installation.

Photography

For the best panoramic shots, hike slightly up Khar Zurkh Mountain to capture a sweeping view of the lake from above. The wooden sculptures placed in the surrounding forest create a mystical and historically rich atmosphere, perfect for close-up and storytelling photography.

Getting There

From Ulaanbaatar, travel along the paved highway toward Khentii Province, then turn northwest near Tsenkhermandal Soum. From there, continue about 30–40 km on a dirt road. The site is accessible by sedan in good weather, but road conditions may become difficult during rain.

Activities

Visitors can enjoy horseback riding, hiking along the lakeshore, or relaxing at nearby tourist camps. The peaceful environment makes it an ideal place for both cultural exploration and nature-based recreation.
