About Dundgovi

Location and Geography

Dundgovi Province has 15 soums and 68 bags under its administrative structure, covering a total area of 7,469,000 hectares, which accounts for 4.5% of Mongolia’s territory. The provincial center, Mandalgovi, is located 265 km from the capital city, Ulaanbaatar. It borders Tov, Govisumber, Dornogovi, Omnogovi, and Ovorkhangai provinces.

Population and Culture

Livestock herding is the dominant economic activity in Dundgovi Province. The region is well known nationwide for its traditional music and songs, fermented mare’s milk (airag), and high-quality mutton. It is also among the provinces with the highest number of livestock per household compared to the national average.

Natural Attractions

Dundgovi Province features unique geological formations and landscapes shaped by ancient natural processes, including Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa), Morin Tolgoi cliffs, and Oosh sand dunes, which are remnants of an ancient seabed. The province is also home to granite mountain formations such as Ikh Gazriin Chuluu and Baga Gazriin Chuluu, as well as saxaul forests and natural groves. Other scenic sites include Olgokh, Gurvan Tögrog, Ergeneg, Khaya, Nemnee, Nomgon, Khairkhan, and the Zagyn Us area, making it a region of striking desert beauty and geological significance.
