About Zavkhan
Location and Geography
Zavkhan Province is located in northwestern Mongolia. It
borders Khovd and Uvs provinces to the west, the Tuva Republic of Russia to the
north, Khuvsgul and Arkhangai provinces to the east, and Bayankhongor and
Govi-Altai provinces to the south. The province is characterized by three
distinct geographical zones: the Gobi Desert, the Khangai Mountains, and the
steppe. It experiences cold winters and relatively wet summers. The coldest
temperature ever recorded in Tosontsengel soum reached −53°C.
Population and Economy
Livestock husbandry is the backbone of Zavkhan’s economy. In
2022, the province recorded a total livestock population of 3,721,059,
including 1,888,615 sheep, 1,286,615 goats, 256,477 cattle, 271,568 horses, and
8,701 camels. Agriculture also plays an important role, with potatoes,
vegetables, and sea buckthorn among the main crops cultivated. In addition, the
province possesses significant mineral resources, including iron ore, gold,
tin, copper, diamonds, and molybdenum ore.
Natural Attractions
Zavkhan Province is rich in natural beauty, with 189 rivers
and streams, 91 lakes, and more than 40 scenic natural sites. Its diverse
ecosystems support a wide variety of wildlife, including bears, wild boars, roe
deer, red deer, argali sheep, ibex, snow leopards, wolves, foxes, and hares.
The province’s combination of mountains, rivers, lakes, and abundant wildlife
makes it one of Mongolia’s most attractive destinations for nature lovers and
eco-tourism.
