Manzushir Monastery

The monastery was founded in 1733 by Donkhor Khutagt Luvsanjambaldanzan. It was built in a scenic alpine forest at an elevation of about 1,800 meters above sea level, surrounded by pine and mixed forest landscapes. Over time, it grew into a large monastic complex that combined Mongolian and Tibetan architectural styles.

However, the monastery was largely destroyed in the 1930s. Today, its ruins are preserved as a protected cultural site, and some structures have been restored, including the “Seruun Lavrin” building, which now functions as a museum showcasing artifacts, crafts, and historical information about the monastery and Bogd Khan Mountain.

One notable artifact preserved nearby is a massive bronze cooking pot (jas pot), made in 1726, with a capacity of about 1,800 liters, capable of preparing food for up to 1,000 people at once.

Manzushir Monastery is also closely connected with Mongolian spiritual traditions, including rituals of circumambulating Bogd Khan Mountain. Local people historically revered the mountain so deeply that they avoided even collecting firewood from it.

TRAVEL TIPS

Access: It takes about 1 hour from Ulaanbaatar by car or taxi.

Best route: It is often recommended to combine a hiking trip in Bogd Khan Mountain with a visit to the monastery.

Timing: Arrive before 18:00, as forest paths can become dark and difficult to navigate.

Preparation: Bring water and snacks, as there are no shops or restaurants nearby.

Best season: May–June is especially beautiful when the forest is in full bloom.
