Gandantegchinlen Monastery is the largest and most active Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, and the main center of the Gelug (Yellow Hat) tradition of Tibetan Buddhism in the country. Its name means “The Great Place of Complete Joy.”
The monastery was originally founded in 1809 through the initiative of the 5th Bogd Jebtsundamba Khutuktu. The first temple, known as “Shar Sum” (Yellow Temple), was established on Dalhyn Denzh hill. Over time, the complex expanded with multiple temples and philosophical colleges (datsans), becoming a major religious center in Mongolia.
The main temple houses priceless religious artifacts, including the “Seven Precious Objects” created by the great artist Zanabazar, a complete set of the 108-volume handwritten Kanjur, and a Buddha statue gifted from India. The monastery library, established in 1925, preserves over 50,000 rare manuscripts in Mongolian and Tibetan, making it an important center for religious and academic research.
A unique feature of the monastery is the Migjid Janraisig statue, a massive gilded Avalokiteshvara image that is one of the most iconic spiritual symbols of Mongolia. The complex also includes the famous “Wish-Fulfilling Tree” column, believed by devotees to have survived historical destruction due to its spiritual power.
