About Uvs

Location and Geography

Uvs Province has a unique landscape that includes the Great Lakes Depression, the Kharkhiraa, Turgen, and Khan Khukhii mountain ranges, as well as steppe, desert, and high-mountain ecosystems. Its highest peak is Kharkhiraa Mountain (4,116 meters). Major rivers such as the Tes, Nariin, and Zavkhan flow through the province, while large lakes including Uvs, Khyargas, Uureg, and Achit are located within its territory. The natural environment encompasses diverse ecological zones such as forest-steppe, desert, alpine meadows, lake shores, and taiga forests. The province is home to 64 species of mammals, 270 species of birds, and 7 species of fish.

Population and Culture

The majority of Uvs Province’s population is ethnic Mongolian (99.6%). Among them, Dörvöd account for 42.3%, Bayad 34.2%, Khoton 7.4%, and Khalkh approximately 15%. The age structure of the population consists of 33.8% aged 0–14 years, 62.7% aged 15–64 years, and 3.5% aged 65 years and older.

Uvs Province is home to the Uvs Lake Basin, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and contains numerous historical and cultural landmarks. Notable attractions include: 

Uvs Lake and Khyargas Lake, Khetsuu Khad and the Altan Els Strictly Protected Area, Archaeological discoveries at Chandmani Mountain, Deer stones, stone statues, and ancient rock carvings, Mungut Tsakhir Mountain and Deglii Tsagaan Mountain
