Location and Geography

The province lies within the Mongolian Altai mountain range and is home to major mountains such as Munkhkhairkhan, Khokh Serkh, and Baatarkhairkhan. Approximately 20% of its territory consists of desert and semi-desert landscapes. Major rivers include the Khovd, Buyant, Bulgan, Chono Kharaikh, and Tsenkher rivers. The province also contains large lakes such as Khar-Us Lake, Khar Lake, and Durgun Lake. Khovd experiences a harsh continental climate, with temperatures reaching up to +40°C in summer and dropping to -35°C in winter, accompanied by generally dry conditions.

Population and Culture

Khovd Province is known as a homeland of diverse ethnic groups, with more than 17 ethnicities and subgroups living together. The population includes Khalkh (28.1%), Zakhchin (25.3%), Kazakh (11.2%), Uriankhai (8.3%), Torguud (7.4%), Dorvod (6.5%), Oold (6.0%), and Myangad (5.3%). As of 2024, the province had an estimated population of approximately 92,417 people.

Surrounded by the majestic Altai Mountains, vast steppes, freshwater lakes, protected natural areas, and oases, Khovd Province offers remarkable natural beauty and cultural diversity. Visitors traveling to Bulgan Soum during the harvest season can enjoy an abundance of locally grown fruits. Since 1959, the area has been known for cultivating its famous dwarf apples, plums, sweet melons, and 18 species of wild sea buckthorn, which have become local specialties and an important part of the region’s identity.
