About Govi-Altai
Location and Geography
Govi-Altai Province is located in southwestern Mongolia. The
Mongolian Altai mountain range stretches across the province from the northwest
to the southeast, creating a dramatic and diverse landscape. The region
features a unique combination of mountains, valleys, deserts, and open steppes.
Population and Culture
The province is rich in cultural and historical heritage,
with numerous ancient rock paintings, Buddhist monasteries, sacred mountains,
and archaeological sites found throughout its territory. The local population
continues to preserve Mongolia’s nomadic traditions, offering visitors the
opportunity to experience authentic herder lifestyles, traditional music, and
the country's deep-rooted horse culture.
Natural Attractions
The southern slopes of the Altai Mountains are characterized
by desert gray-brown soils, while the mountainous areas contain alpine meadow
and mountain brown soils. In the northern part of the province, steppe soils
and vegetation dominate the landscape. Govi-Altai is home to a remarkable
variety of wildlife, including several globally endangered species such as the
saiga antelope, khulan (wild ass), wild Bactrian camel, and the Gobi bear (Mazaalai).
These rare animals, together with the province’s unique ecosystems and scenic
landscapes, make Govi-Altai one of Mongolia’s most important regions for
biodiversity conservation and nature-based tourism.
